Spb Software House has released Spb Wireless Monitor, the successor to the once very popular Spb GPRS Monitor:

Spb Wireless Monitor measures data traffic on all your wireless (and also USB) connections, and shows even detailed info for each consuming application. You can add or modify existing or new data plan details, and it will alarm you when you've reached your data plan limits. Finally, you can export all this data to HTML and Excel CSV (comma separated).

When you talk about a much needed update, SPB GPRS Monitor comes to my mind. It is from an era where GPRS was slow, expensive and had to be monitored to keep the bills down.

What has changed since then? Instead of using the GPRS connection only for 1 dedicated purpose (reading email headers, or a quick Google search), everyone uses a myriad of tools and apps that all connect to the internet for one reason or another: getting the latest weather forecast, full email activity, talking with Skype or other voip apps, taking notes with Evernote, updating your FaceBook status, project and task management with Task2Gather, etc. In fact, the only thing has really changed is that nowadays we use wireless connections much more. SPB Wireless Monitor is the ideal companion for this, have a look:

The Today plugin shows all connections on your device, along with their usage today and current traffic speed. In my opinion, this is a life saver. In a glance you can see that you've reached your daily limits on your GPRS connection and that it's time to activate Wifi or usb connection. Very handy.

When you tap on a connection on the Today screen, you get a table of numbers for that connection today per application. Via the Menu you can choose other time periods, a different report type (per application cost, per application traffic, total cost, total traffic), one of the other connections or all together, and toggle between table or chart view (see below).

This is the chart view, where you can quickly see what app takes the most bandwidth. Via the menu you change it just like the table view.

This is the screen where you can define your standard tariff (per connection). In my case, I had to create it myself since my data plan (Base Data Comfort) was not in the list. The process is very easy, a wizard will ask you a few questions and you're done.

As you can see in the screenshots above, I've run Spb Wireless Monitor successfully on the Treo Pro with Real VGA hack (96dpi). Even the Today plugin works as expected. I hope Spb will update their other applications the same way.

My conclusion: Spb Wireless Monitor is a must have application for everyone that uses a wireless connection (and who doesn't?). It's powerful, full-featured, flexible and very easy to operate through its simple and beautiful interface. I cannot name any competing app that combines all these strengths. Highly recommended!
