Are you having trouble connecting your Windows Mobile device (PocketPC, Smartphone, PDA) to ActiveSync (XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista)?

It’s a hit-or-miss story when I try to sync while Eset SmartSecurity firewall is in automatic mode, especially when trying the ActiveSync via Bluetooth connection on the Treo Pro.

If you can set your firewall to interactive mode, that might work. Although I find the myriad of requests launched from Windows internal services too confusing for most people. One permanent block to any of these requests and some apps or services will fail in the future.

By far the best method is to manually add the necessary ports for ActiveSync/WMDC to your firewall configuration. These are the TCP ports that you need to open:

  • 990 (RAPI)
  • 999 (Status)
  • 5678 (Legacy Replication)
  • 5679 (Handshake & Legacy Replication)
  • 5721 (Desktop Passthrough)
  • 26675 (Airsync)
