Until recently, Windows Mobile (PocketPC) devices with 320x320 screen resolution were not widely available because that was an unsupported resolution (find out more here and here). Today there are a few beautiful devices, most notably the Samsung SGH i780, Samsung Epix SGH i907, Palm Treo 800w and of course the Palm Treo Pro (Treo 850).
While there is technically no reason why the excellent navigation program Navigon MobileNavigator 6 and MobileNavigator 7 wouldn't run on these PDA phones, in reality you get the splash screen at best and that's it.
A little digging around with MN6ResourceView and we soon find the reason: the resources for the 320 x 320 resolution are not present!
To get MN6 and MN7 running on your new 320x320 device, we cannot insert the missing resources since we don't have them. So we'll have to come up with a different solution, and luckily I've found a very easy way to do just that. We'll scale resources and dialog information from other resolutions and map it to our resolution. Because this process takes a lot of changes to the configuration files, I won't post them here. Instead I've zipped the modified configuration files (from a fresh installation) and attached them below.
For Navigon MN6:
Unpack the zipfile and replace MN6\BinaryConfig.xml and MN6\Settings\ApplicationSettings.xml on your device or storage card.
Navigon-MN6-320x320.zip (6.03 kb)
For Navigon MN7:
Unpack the zipfile and replace Navigon\BinaryConfig.xml, Navigon\CacheConfig.xml and Navigon\Settings\ApplicationSettings.xml on your device or storage card.
Navigon-MN7-320x320.zip (8.44 kb)
Navigon-MN7-320x320-fixed.zip (8.49 kb)
Please backup the current folder of your Navigon installation (\MN6) or Navigon 7 (\NAVIGON) before copying/replacing these files. I'm not responsible for any damage or problems you may encounter. If it doesn't work for you, restore the original files and all is back to normal.
